According to the National Cancer Institute, there have been many preclinical laboratory/animal studies using Cannabis or cannabinoids that have investigated: Antitumor activity, stimulating appetite, pain relief, nausea and vomiting & anxiety and sleep.

Preclinical studies of cannabinoids on Antitumor activity have included:

Cannabinoids have been shown to inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth and blocking the development of blood vessels that are needed by the tumors to grow in mice and rats. They have also been shown to protect normal cells during these studies. In mice, studies have also been shown to protect against inflammation of the colon and potentially in reducing the risk of colon cancer.

An additional laboratory study of delta-9-THC in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) cells showed that it inhibited or killed the cancer cells. In the same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects. Delta-9-THC has been shown to cause this by acting on molecules that may also be found in cell lung cancer cells and breast cancer cells.

Another lab study of cannabidiol in estrogen receptor positive and negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death. Additional studies in mouse models of breast cancer showed that cannabinoids can lessen the growth & spread of tumors.

A laboratory study of cannabidiol/CBD in human glioma cells showed that when combined with chemotherapy, CBD can make chemo more effective and increase cancer cell death. Additional studies in mouse models of cancer showed that CBD with delta-9-THC may make chemotherapy more effective.
